6819bc6285 tracing: Do not register unsupported perf events

Synthetic events currently do not have a function to register perf events.
This leads to calling the tracepoint register functions with a NULL
function pointer which triggers:

Instead, have the code return -ENODEV, which doesn't warn and has perf
error out with:

Error:
The sys_perf_event_open() syscall returned with 19 (No such device) for event (synthetic:futex_wait).
"dmesg | grep -i perf" may provide additional information.

Ideally perf should support synthetic events, but for now just fix the
warning. The support can come later.

6828f769d9 tracing: Fix memory leaks in create_field_var()

The function create_field_var() allocates memory for 'val' through
create_hist_field() inside parse_atom(), and for 'var' through
create_var(), which in turn allocates var->type and var->var.name
internally. Simply calling kfree() to release these structures will
result in memory leaks.

Use destroy_hist_field() to properly free 'val', and explicitly release
the memory of var->type and var->var.name before freeing 'var' itself.

the backport, not to have this warning. See commit 72848b81b3
("tracing: Ensure module defining synth event cannot be unloaded while

2cbcd02616 minmax: make generic MIN() and MAX() macros available everywhere

This just standardizes the use of MIN() and MAX() macros, with the very
traditional semantics.  The goal is to use these for C constant
expressions and for top-level / static initializers, and so be able to
simplify the min()/max() macros.

These macro names were used by various kernel code - they are very
traditional, after all - and all such users have been fixed up, with a
few different approaches:

 - trivial duplicated macro definitions have been removed

   Note that 'trivial' here means that it's obviously kernel code that
   already included all the major kernel headers, and thus gets the new
   generic MIN/MAX macros automatically.

 - non-trivial duplicated macro definitions are guarded with #ifndef

   This is the "yes, they define their own versions, but no, the include
   situation is not entirely obvious, and maybe they don't get the
   generic version automatically" case.

 - strange use case #1

   A couple of drivers decided that the way they want to describe their
   versioning is with

	#define MAJ 1
	#define MIN 2
	#define DRV_VERSION __stringify(MAJ) "." __stringify(MIN)

   which adds zero value and I just did my Alexander the Great
   impersonation, and rewrote that pointless Gordian knot as

	#define DRV_VERSION "1.2"

   instead.

 - strange use case #2

   A couple of drivers thought that it's a good idea to have a random
   'MIN' or 'MAX' define for a value or index into a table, rather than
   the traditional macro that takes arguments.

   These values were re-written as C enum's instead. The new
   function-line macros only expand when followed by an open
   parenthesis, and thus don't clash with enum use.

Happily, there weren't really all that many of these cases, and a lot of
users already had the pattern of using '#ifndef' guarding (or in one
case just using '#undef MIN') before defining their own private version
that does the same thing. I left such cases alone.

4. CPU1 checks TP_FLAG_PROFILE - condition passes (step 2 completed)
5. CPU1 calls kprobe_perf_func() and crashes at (3) because
   call->perf_events is still NULL

CPU1 sees that kprobe functionality is enabled but does not see that
perf_events has been assigned.

Add pairing read and write memory barriers to guarantee that if CPU1
sees that kprobe functionality is enabled, it must also see that
perf_events has been assigned.

61642d0bd1 tracing: Fix tracing_marker may trigger page fault during preempt_disable

Both tracing_mark_write and tracing_mark_raw_write call
__copy_from_user_inatomic during preempt_disable. But in some case,
__copy_from_user_inatomic may trigger page fault, and will call schedule()
subtly. And if a task is migrated to other cpu, the following warning will
be trigger:

As shown above, the process will acquire cpuid twice and the return values
are not the same.

To fix this problem using copy_from_user_nofault instead of
__copy_from_user_inatomic, as the former performs 'access_ok' before
copying.

5ab0ec206d ftrace: Fix potential warning in trace_printk_seq during ftrace_dump

When calling ftrace_dump_one() concurrently with reading trace_pipe,
a WARN_ON_ONCE() in trace_printk_seq() can be triggered due to a race
condition.

The issue occurs because:

In the context between trace_empty() and trace_find_next_entry_inc()
during ftrace_dump, the ring buffer data was consumed by other readers.
This caused trace_find_next_entry_inc to return NULL, failing to populate
`iter.seq`. At this point, due to the prior trace_iterator_reset, both
`iter.seq.len` and `iter.seq.size` were set to 0. Since they are equal,
the WARN_ON_ONCE condition is triggered.

Move the trace_printk_seq() into the if block that checks to make sure the
return value of trace_find_next_entry_inc() is non-NULL in
ftrace_dump_one(), ensuring the 'iter.seq' is properly populated before
subsequent operations.

The reason is that trace_get_user will fail when processing a string
longer than FTRACE_BUFF_MAX, but not set the end of parser->buffer to 0.
Then an OOB access will be triggered in ftrace_regex_release->
ftrace_process_regex->strsep->strpbrk. We can solve this problem by
limiting access to parser->buffer when trace_get_user failed.

78c8e107fe tracing: Remove unneeded goto out logic

Several places in the trace.c file there's a goto out where the out is
simply a return. There's no reason to jump to the out label if it's not
doing any more logic but simply returning from the function.

Replace the goto outs with a return and remove the out labels.

db45632479 tracing: Add down_write(trace_event_sem) when adding trace event

When a module is loaded, it adds trace events defined by the module. It
may also need to modify the modules trace printk formats to replace enum
names with their values.

If two modules are loaded at the same time, the adding of the event to the
ftrace_events list can corrupt the walking of the list in the code that is
modifying the printk format strings and crash the kernel.

The addition of the event should take the trace_event_sem for write while
it adds the new event.

Also add a lockdep_assert_held() on that semaphore in
__trace_add_event_dirs() as it iterates the list.

c4cd93811e ftrace: Also allocate and copy hash for reading of filter files
commit bfb336cf97 upstream.

Currently the reader of set_ftrace_filter and set_ftrace_notrace just adds
the pointer to the global tracer hash to its iterator. Unlike the writer
that allocates a copy of the hash, the reader keeps the pointer to the
filter hashes. This is problematic because this pointer is static across
function calls that release the locks that can update the global tracer
hashes. This can cause UAF and similar bugs.

Allocate and copy the hash for reading the filter files like it is done
for the writers. This not only fixes UAF bugs, but also makes the code a
bit simpler as it doesn't have to differentiate when to free the
iterator's hash between writers and readers.

The problem is when a module triggers an issue with ftrace and
sets ftrace_disable. The ftrace_disable is set when an anomaly is
discovered and to prevent any more damage, ftrace stops all text
modification. The issue that happened was that the ftrace_disable stops
more than just the text modification.

When a module is loaded, its init functions can also be traced. Because
kallsyms deletes the init functions after a module has loaded, ftrace
saves them when the module is loaded and function tracing is enabled. This
allows the output of the function trace to show the init function names
instead of just their raw memory addresses.

When a module is removed, ftrace_release_mod() is called, and if
ftrace_disable is set, it just returns without doing anything more. The
problem here is that it leaves the mod_list still around and if kallsyms
is called, it will call into this code and access the module memory that
has already been freed as it will return:

  strscpy(module_name, mod_map->mod->name, MODULE_NAME_LEN);

Where the "mod" no longer exists and triggers a UAF bug.

3c735c4470 tracing: Fix compilation warning on arm32

On arm32, size_t is defined to be unsigned int, while PAGE_SIZE is
unsigned long. This hence triggers a compilation warning as min()
asserts the type of two operands to be equal. Casting PAGE_SIZE to size_t

It has been reported that trace_seq_to_buffer() tries to copy more data
than PAGE_SIZE to buf. Therefore, to prevent this, we should use the

385b6bf968 tracing: Fix synth event printk format for str fields

The printk format for synth event uses "%.*s" to print string fields,
but then only passes the pointer part as var arg.

Replace %.*s with %s as the C string is guaranteed to be null-terminated.

The output in print fmt should never have been updated as __get_str()
handles the string limit because it can access the length of the string in
the string meta data that is saved in the ring buffer.

Allow a stacktrace from one event to be displayed by the end event of a
synthetic event. This is very useful when looking for the longest latency
of a sleep or something blocked on I/O.

The filter string testing uses strncpy_from_kernel/user_nofault() to
retrieve the string to test the filter against. The if() statement was
incorrect as it considered 0 as a fault, when it is only negative that it
faulted.

Running the following commands:

  # echo "filename.ustring ~ \"/proc*\"" > events/syscalls/sys_enter_openat/filter
  # echo 1 > events/syscalls/sys_enter_openat/enable

618655d54c ftrace: Add cond_resched() to ftrace_graph_set_hash()

When the kernel contains a large number of functions that can be traced,
the loop in ftrace_graph_set_hash() may take a lot of time to execute.
This may trigger the softlockup watchdog.

Add cond_resched() within the loop to allow the kernel to remain
responsive even when processing a large number of functions.

This matches the cond_resched() that is used in other locations of the
code that iterates over all functions that can be traced.

6a3559d09c tracing: fix return value in __ftrace_event_enable_disable for TRACE_REG_UNREGISTER

When __ftrace_event_enable_disable invokes the class callback to
unregister the event, the return value is not reported up to the
caller, hence leading to event unregister failures being silently
ignored.

This patch assigns the ret variable to the invocation of the
event unregister callback, so that its return value is stored
and reported to the caller, and it raises a warning in case
of error.

72848b81b3 tracing: Ensure module defining synth event cannot be unloaded while tracing
commit 21581dd4e7 upstream.

Currently, using synth_event_delete() will fail if the event is being
used (tracing in progress), but that is normally done in the module exit
function. At that stage, failing is problematic as returning a non-zero
status means the module will become locked (impossible to unload or
reload again).

Instead, ensure the module exit function does not get called in the
first place by increasing the module refcnt when the event is enabled.

de7b309139 tracing: Fix use-after-free in print_graph_function_flags during tracer switching
commit 7f81f27b10 upstream.

Kairui reported a UAF issue in print_graph_function_flags() during
ftrace stress testing [1]. This issue can be reproduced if puting a
'mdelay(10)' after 'mutex_unlock(&trace_types_lock)' in s_start(),
and executing the following script:

  $ echo function_graph > current_tracer
  $ cat trace > /dev/null &
  $ sleep 5  # Ensure the 'cat' reaches the 'mdelay(10)' point
  $ echo timerlat > current_tracer

The root cause lies in the two calls to print_graph_function_flags
within print_trace_line during each s_show():

  * One through 'iter->trace->print_line()';
  * Another through 'event->funcs->trace()', which is hidden in
    print_trace_fmt() before print_trace_line returns.

Tracer switching only updates the former, while the latter continues
to use the print_line function of the old tracer, which in the script
above is print_graph_function_flags.

Moreover, when switching from the 'function_graph' tracer to the
'timerlat' tracer, s_start only calls graph_trace_close of the
'function_graph' tracer to free 'iter->private', but does not set
it to NULL. This provides an opportunity for 'event->funcs->trace()'
to use an invalid 'iter->private'.

To fix this issue, set 'iter->private' to NULL immediately after
freeing it in graph_trace_close(), ensuring that an invalid pointer
is not passed to other tracers. Additionally, clean up the unnecessary

98e173eeab bpf: Use preempt_count() directly in bpf_send_signal_common()

bpf_send_signal_common() uses preemptible() to check whether or not the
current context is preemptible. If it is preemptible, it will use
irq_work to send the signal asynchronously instead of trying to hold a
spin-lock, because spin-lock is sleepable under PREEMPT_RT.

However, preemptible() depends on CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT. When
CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT is turned off (e.g., CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y),
!preemptible() will be evaluated as 1 and bpf_send_signal_common() will
use irq_work unconditionally.

Fix it by unfolding "!preemptible()" and using "preempt_count() != 0 ||
irqs_disabled()" instead.

4a6f053af1 tracing: Fix cmp_entries_dup() to respect sort() comparison rules
commit e63fbd5f68 upstream.

The cmp_entries_dup() function used as the comparator for sort()
violated the symmetry and transitivity properties required by the
sorting algorithm. Specifically, it returned 1 whenever memcmp() was
non-zero, which broke the following expectations:

* Symmetry: If x < y, then y > x.
* Transitivity: If x < y and y < z, then x < z.

These violations could lead to incorrect sorting and failure to
correctly identify duplicate elements.

Fix the issue by directly returning the result of memcmp(), which
adheres to the required comparison properties.

62a8d90e32 trace/trace_event_perf: remove duplicate samples on the first tracepoint event

When a tracepoint event is created with attr.freq = 1,
'hwc->period_left' is not initialized correctly. As a result,
in the perf_swevent_overflow() function, when the first time the event occurs,
it calculates the event overflow and the perf_swevent_set_period() returns 3,
this leads to the event are recorded for three duplicate times.

Step to reproduce:
    1. Enable the tracepoint event & starting tracing
         $ echo 1 > /sys/kernel/tracing/events/module/module_free
         $ echo 1 > /sys/kernel/tracing/tracing_on

    2. Record with perf
         $ perf record -a --strict-freq -F 1 -e "module:module_free"

    3. Trigger module_free event.
         $ modprobe -i sunrpc
         $ modprobe -r sunrpc

Result:
     - Trace pipe result:
         $ cat trace_pipe

The current mod command causes a null pointer dereference. While commit

Recent changes to count number of matching symbols when creating
a kprobe event failed to take into account kernel modules. As such, it
breaks kprobes on kernel module symbols, by assuming there is no match.

Fix this my calling module_kallsyms_on_each_symbol() in addition to
kallsyms_on_each_match_symbol() to perform a proper counting.

When a kprobe is attached to a function that's name is not unique (is
static and shares the name with other functions in the kernel), the
kprobe is attached to the first function it finds. This is a bug as the
function that it is attaching to is not necessarily the one that the
user wants to attach to.

Instead of blindly picking a function to attach to what is ambiguous,
error with EADDRNOTAVAIL to let the user know that this function is not
unique, and that the user must use another unique function with an
address offset to get to the function they want to attach to.

f2fd1a9597 tracing: Have saved_cmdlines arrays all in one allocation

The saved_cmdlines have three arrays for mapping PIDs to COMMs:

 - map_pid_to_cmdline[]
 - map_cmdline_to_pid[]
 - saved_cmdlines

The map_pid_to_cmdline[] is PID_MAX_DEFAULT in size and holds the index
into the other arrays. The map_cmdline_to_pid[] is a mapping back to the
full pid as it can be larger than PID_MAX_DEFAULT. And the
saved_cmdlines[] just holds the COMMs associated to the pids.

Currently the map_pid_to_cmdline[] and saved_cmdlines[] are allocated
together (in reality the saved_cmdlines is just in the memory of the
rounding of the allocation of the structure as it is always allocated in
powers of two). The map_cmdline_to_pid[] array is allocated separately.

Since the rounding to a power of two is rather large (it allows for 8000
elements in saved_cmdlines), also include the map_cmdline_to_pid[] array.
(This drops it to 6000 by default, which is still plenty for most use
cases). This saves even more memory as the map_cmdline_to_pid[] array
doesn't need to be allocated.

a009e88cc9 tracing: Remove precision vsnprintf() check from print event

This reverts 60be76eeab ("tracing: Add size check when printing
trace_marker output"). The only reason the precision check was added
was because of a bug that miscalculated the write size of the string into
the ring buffer and it truncated it removing the terminating nul byte. On
reading the trace it crashed the kernel. But this was due to the bug in
the code that happened during development and should never happen in
practice. If anything, the precision can hide bugs where the string in the
ring buffer isn't nul terminated and it will not be checked.

e6be2e1ebc x86/ibt,ftrace: Search for __fentry__ location
commit aebfd12521 upstream.

Currently a lot of ftrace code assumes __fentry__ is at sym+0. However
with Intel IBT enabled the first instruction of a function will most
likely be ENDBR.

Change ftrace_location() to not only return the __fentry__ location
when called for the __fentry__ location, but also when called for the
sym+0 location.

Then audit/update all callsites of this function to consistently use
these new semantics.

e3ad85c477 tracing: Avoid possible softlockup in tracing_iter_reset()
commit 49aa8a1f4d upstream.

In __tracing_open(), when max latency tracers took place on the cpu,
the time start of its buffer would be updated, then event entries with
timestamps being earlier than start of the buffer would be skipped
(see tracing_iter_reset()).

Softlockup will occur if the kernel is non-preemptible and too many
entries were skipped in the loop that reset every cpu buffer, so add
cond_resched() to avoid it.

eb223bf01e tracing: Fix overflow in get_free_elt()
commit bcf86c01ca upstream.

"tracing_map->next_elt" in get_free_elt() is at risk of overflowing.

Once it overflows, new elements can still be inserted into the tracing_map
even though the maximum number of elements (`max_elts`) has been reached.
Continuing to insert elements after the overflow could result in the
tracing_map containing "tracing_map->max_size" elements, leaving no empty
entries.
If any attempt is made to insert an element into a full tracing_map using
`__tracing_map_insert()`, it will cause an infinite loop with preemption
disabled, leading to a CPU hang problem.

Fix this by preventing any further increments to "tracing_map->next_elt"
once it reaches "tracing_map->max_elt".

a85bae262c tracing: Build event generation tests only as modules

The kprobes and synth event generation test modules add events and lock
(get a reference) those event file reference in module init function,
and unlock and delete it in module exit function. This is because those
are designed for playing as modules.

If we make those modules as built-in, those events are left locked in the

1e16019604 ring-buffer: Fix a race between readers and resize checks
commit c2274b908d upstream.

The reader code in rb_get_reader_page() swaps a new reader page into the
ring buffer by doing cmpxchg on old->list.prev->next to point it to the
new page. Following that, if the operation is successful,
old->list.next->prev gets updated too. This means the underlying
doubly-linked list is temporarily inconsistent, page->prev->next or
page->next->prev might not be equal back to page for some page in the
ring buffer.

The resize operation in ring_buffer_resize() can be invoked in parallel.
It calls rb_check_pages() which can detect the described inconsistency
and stop further tracing:

Note that ring_buffer_resize() calls rb_check_pages() only if the parent
trace_buffer has recording disabled. Recent commit d78ab79270
("tracing: Stop current tracer when resizing buffer") causes that it is
now always the case which makes it more likely to experience this issue.

The window to hit this race is nonetheless very small. To help
reproducing it, one can add a delay loop in rb_get_reader_page():
